A good bench can be difficult to find, especially if you need one that’s just the right size for an awkward space. The available options tend to be too big, too small, or just too utilitarian. These DIY benches solve this common problem, letting you customize a bench that literally fits in better with your decor.
The built-in bench, above, was created by Naomi and Sage of Plaster & Disaster as a way to maximize seating in a dining room, but would also be great for turning an awkward corner into a reading nook. At 12′ in length, there’s more than enough space to stretch out, or seat guests for a get-together. Their tutorial is easy to follow for even those who are relatively new to working with wood. You’ll also see how the bench changed drastically in style after they had the very relatable problem of not fully loving the original stain they went with for the project. (It went from a dark stain to the crisp white you see here.)
For a smaller-scale DIY bench that’ll help you get a better handle on your work working skills, try this hairpin bench from Grillo Designs. The top is made from basic planks that are held together by heavy strap ties, making this an easy project for beginners. Make a long version for a casual dining table, or make it short for a small entryway.
The bottom of the bed is a classic spot for a bench, making it a little easier to get dressed during your bleary-eyed mornings. For a custom look, Ashley Mayes of Bigger Than the Three of Us re-covered her current bench using a vintage rug. Not only does it add a dash of boho style, the rug-upholstery will durably stand up to years of use. Best of all, she says the whole project only took about 10 minutes to complete.
If your taste leans towards rustic, then you’ll love this outdoor garden bench project by Christina of The DIY Mommy. She used two large logs and some reclaimed wood to create a very unexpected look in her garden.
If you’re handy enough to follow furniture building plans, this leather-topped director’s bench by Pneumatic Addict for Remodelaholic should be on your to-do list. Inspired by a similar bench at CB2, the sleek bench is a great addition to a modern entryway.
