Before & After: A Sofa Found on the Street Gets a DIY Makeover

Alfredo and Ken found this boho dream of a couch on the street (what luck!) and after letting it sit around for a bit, gave it a major vacation vibes makeover.

From Alfredo and Ken: We found this vintage rattan couch on the street, it had no cushions but it was in great shape!

We carried it to our house and it was sitting in our backyard for a few months before we knew what to do with it. Finally with a couple of cans of spray paint, a few sheets of sandpaper, pink flamingos and some fun fabric the couch is ready for the sunny drunk happy days of Summer!

Days are getting warmer and the summer is always the perfect excuse to “revamp” your backyard or add a few touches of color.

We basically sanded the bamboo very well, just to get the old paint off and make the new paint to adhere better to the surface. We then painted the entire chair in one afternoon, and we used four cans of semi gloss black spray paint.

After the actual couch was ready and dry, we’ve decided to go for a fun but classic colorful fabric (Banana Leaf print) with a bright pink pipping.

The whole project cost probably around $300 and the most expensive part was the actual fabric. At $35 a yard, it took about eight yards to make the four cushions and the long cushion for sitting.

I love the overall look of the couch, which is fun, inviting, and it looks BRAND NEW!

Alfredo and Ken’s words of wisdom: Make sure to sand off the old paint from the furniture piece. Also choose a fabric that is made for outdoors and is easy to clean.

Thank you, Alfredo and Ken!
