A “Genius” Rental Kitchen Solution That’s Actually Incredibly Simple

For most renters, all decorating efforts come to a screeching halt in the kitchen. Whether it’s dated countertops, offensive wood finishes, or lighting that you’re pretty sure was initially installed for a crime scene investigation, most kitchen eyesores require major permanent solutions — or so we thought. After touring Sadie’s “Eclectic Chaos” NYC Rental, we picked up a hot tip on how to temporarily transform your nightmare kitchen into the kitchen of your (PG Ryan Gosling) dreams.

If you wish you spent more time cooking meals at home but can’t be motivated enough to break out of your takeout cycle, perhaps the state of your kitchen is to blame. Sadie Stein is a freelance writer who spends a lot of time at home and admits, “it’s important to me that the place be happy, that there be nice colors, that there be fresh flowers […]”. By removing the doors from her kitchen cabinets, Sadie revealed a world of colorful glasses, bowls, and vases that now serve as heart-warming eye candy for her days indoors.

Most cabinet doors are easy to remove and require nothing more than a screwdriver and a little elbow grease. We recommend choosing a few cabinets to leave as-is for more unsightly items (canned food, supplements, etc.), like Sadie has done on the left. This way, only your most prized kitchen possessions will be neatly organized and displayed on the doorless units. If you don’t like the look of your cabinet’s innards, you may want to line the inside walls with contact paper or peel-and-stick wallpaper.

Not only does open kitchen shelving provide a display solution for pretty kitchen goods that are begging to be purchased, it’s also motivation to keep things clean and tidy in a room that has the potential to attract pests and insects. Now all you need to figure out is where to stash the cabinet doors (under the bed? in the garage? in your landlord’s kitchen?…the possibilities are endless).

Thanks for the smart renter-friendly solution, Sadie!
