We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Rugs are one of the easiest ways to transform your space, and you can do it within a fairly reasonable budget. With the amount of outlets available, online especially, there’s a huge world of every kind of rug imaginable at your fingertips. And though it might be your first inclination to go with a 5×8 or 8×10, we encourage you to think outside the rectangle. Round rugs are fantastic options for entryways and foyers, dining rooms, kitchens and even bathrooms. Change your shape, change your room.
This rug, hooked in India using 100% wool, immediately caught my attention with its fun, festive tassels and pretty turquoise ground. At 3 feet in diameter, it’s the perfect little addition to any small space. (And what really sealed the deal was the one leaf pattern that looks like eyelashes. It feels like the rug is giving you a playful wink.)
If you’re looking for a rug that will live in a high-traffic area like an entry, jute rugs are the way to go. They’ll take a beating and stand up to all the feet and shoes and dirt that will be dragged in on them. This one, 5 feet in diameter, is woven from jute plant fibers, and the colorful border embellishments make it truly feel like a handwoven artisanal basket that’s been flattened into a floor covering.
One of the hardest parts about buying a rug online is that once you receive it, it often looks nothing like the image. So while I was on the hunt for a vintage, faded look—which this rug fits to a T—this one was a no brainer because many of the reviews say it looked exactly like the customers thought it would when it got delivered. Though there was one that said the colors were a bit more vibrant in person, for the most part, the palette still felt soft like it does online. It’s 6-feet 7-inches round from Safavieh’s Monaco Collection and power-loomed with polypropylene fibers, making it durable for high traffic areas as well.
Polypropylene rugs aren’t for everyone, but some highlights include being stain and fade resistant (plus, they’re the most budget-friendly option out there). This one in particular (that happens to be 6 feet round), by Unique Loom is faux faded in just the right way to get that vintage look that’s so trendy right now.
Our Previous Lists:
Maybe you like a little bit of color without all of that pattern. I get it. This 6-foot-round rug gives the usual jute rug a stylish update with colorful dyes in soft, varying jewel tones. (I’m partial to purple, but these are made to order, so you can choose from a host of others.) Hand-braided by Craftmark-certified artisans in India, it’s a work of art in its own right.
A classic boho look that’s incredibly versatile (heck, I’ve even seen it used on the wall as a headboard!). Made of 100% hand-woven jute, this 5-foot-round rug is charming and would surely add a barefoot-chic vibe to whatever space it graces.
Okay, so you want a jute rug but you’d like something a little softer. Then this one is for you since it has cotton braided into the mix. The bullseye pattern will open up a room and trick your eye into thinking the space is bigger than it is. You can buy one at 5 feet in diameter for $298 or 8 feet in diameter for $698.
Anytime a home object is also a work of art, I’m sold. This round beauty features hand-creweled embroidery in wool with a cotton backing, and the imagery of flowering trees and a fine feathered friend woven onto it feels like a lovely painting. A 5-foot-round version will run you $298 and an 8-foot-round one gets upped to $598.
Other Good Resources:
I’m a sucker for a good watercolor. So when I saw this pretty, painterly piece, it instantly made my wish list. And here’s the real reason it’s a winner: it’s hand-loomed in India with a blend of wool and viscose. Viscose is a fiber that exudes a silky, velvety texture and sheen, so it’s beautiful to look at and very soft under your feet. (I’d even suggest going bold and hanging the 10-foot-round on an empty wall as art—you know, if you have an extra $899 to spare.)
A rug story would not be complete without a hide suggestion, and this neutral selection made in India using dyed hairhide does the trick. Looking for something with more contrast? The 6-foot-round also comes with dark gray strips, as well. Since each rug is made from natural materials, expect some slight differences when you order yours.
This might not be the brightest, boldest rug in the list, but it’s one of those pieces that adds instant warmth and patina to a room that’s missing a little something. At over 9 feet in diameter, it’s quite sizable, but it’s also available in more standard 7- and 5-foot sizes.
