Peek Inside a Sunny Chilled-Out Australian Abode — House Call

Name: Julia
Location: Perth, Australia
The basics: 2 years, owned — 807 square feet

Julia is taking her time settling into her apartment in a historic Art Deco building. Mixing IKEA with art, plants and a reviving coat of white paint, she has created an adorable, breezy space.

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This two bedroom, Art Deco apartment is just home to me, although the second bedroom is often filled with friends and family visiting from out of town. I’ve lived here for just over two years. When I first moved in the place looked pretty glum, but I could see its potential.

Since moving in I’ve set about slowly fixing the space up by giving it a fresh coat of paint and replacing some of the fixtures. All the work has been done by either myself or my parents and I’m really proud of what a great job we’ve done (and how proficient with power tools I’ve become!).

The interior and furnishings are constantly evolving. There is a mix of second hand and vintage pieces, as well as some less expensive IKEA staples. My favourite items are without a doubt the art that I’ve collected. I have a few pieces of Aboriginal art that I purchased while I was working in the outback, as well as some paintings and drawings done by my grandmother.

The building itself is a heritage listed Art Deco apartment complex home to twelve other units. It was built in the 1930s and is a rare find in a city like Perth. I love to think about all the other people who have called this place home before me and imagine what their lives were like.

What is your favorite room and why? Without a doubt the sunroom is my favourite place in the house. There’s nothing I love move than curling up in there with a cup of tea and a good book. It’s beautiful and light-filled and looks out onto mature trees. Best of all, my indoor plants love being in there just as much as I do!

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? The kitchen! A full kitchen renovation is in the cards, once funds permit. In the meantime I’ve tried to make the best of the space with a coat of fresh white paint, some art and inexpensive yet functional shelving from IKEA.

Julia’s words of wisdom: Creating the perfect home can take time, especially if you’re on a limited budget. Be patient and don’t get discouraged, the best homes are often those that evolve over time and really reflect the personality of their owner.

Thanks, Julia!
