Houston Mattress Store Is An Official Shelter Location for Harvey Evacuees

When bad things happen, Mr. Rogers said it best: “Look for the helpers.” The Mattress King of Houston is one such individual, as he’s opened his showrooms to Harvey evacuees.

Every region has a furniture store owner known for whacky commercials. Greater Houston’s is Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture. Mattress related raps aside, McIngvale is doing something good for his neighbors: He’s listed two Houston area showrooms as official shelter locations for Harvey evacuees.

On Sunday, Mack tweeted out an invitation his stores were open to those who needed a meal and a place to sleep. It has been liked by over 50,000 people and retweeted nearly 22,000 times.

The Houston Chronicle reported on a press release from the company on Sunday:

“Houstonians have a safe, dry place to take shelter at Gallery Furniture so if they can get here they are welcome,” said owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale in the release. “We hope to give them some comfort in this incredibly difficult time.”

The store also called for local kennels to take in family pets during the natural disaster.

CNN reports that about 300 evacuees and 60 National Guard are staying at the store’s Grand Parkway location, and that it is stocked with donations of towels, shoes, toys and more from local residents.

McIngvale didn’t just open his doors—he was out making rescues, too. On Sunday, McIngvale and his team used the store’s fleet of delivery trucks to bring in about 200 people who were stranded out in the high water.

If you’re looking for ways to help the people affected by Harvey, here are a just few organizations who are doing good work.
