Season two of your new favorite afterlife-centric sitcom is coming back soon. On September 20, we’ll finally (hopefully) get to find out what happened to the good (and maybe not-so-good) people of The Good Place, after we left them at the end of a cliff-hangery season one finale.
For the uninitiated, The Good Place stars Kristen Bell (Eleanor) and William Jackson Harper (Chidi) as each other’s alleged soulmates in the afterlife. They didn’t know each other during their time on Earth, but they’ve been paired together since departing from it. Season one centered around Eleanor’s realization that she landed in The Good Place by mistake, and on Chidi’s efforts to help reform her from a garbage person to a slightly more ethical one. They’re watched over by The Good Place architect Michael (Ted Danson) and Janet (D’Arcy Carden), a human-looking, Google-like being who literally knows the answer to everything. The cast is rounded out by fellow dead humans, Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto).
The characters are delightful and the jokes are multi-layered in this philosophical sitcom. The pilot episode did a great job of establishing the rules of the world, and the finale left us wondering what exactly had just been upended. As mentioned, season one’s game-changing finale left a lot of jaws dropping, so season two is going to have to answer a lot of questions. I’m mostly excited to see how the season one character dynamics continue when we get to season two, and what the finale means for the future of some of those friendships and potential romantic entanglements. (Spoiler: You get a sneak peek in the video below.)
But if you haven’t seen season one, there’s good news: it’s only 13 episodes long, and it’s all on Netflix now.
