If you’re looking to get the most bang for your Halloween buck, some cities are just sweeter than others. Today, Zillow released their annual Trick or Treat Index, which ranks the country’s top metros in the battle for the best holiday spoils.
The real estate website evaluates cities and neighborhoods based on one simple premise: how can kids score the most candy in the least amount of time. Zillow economists ranked the areas based on home values (“we think these neighborhoods will give out the biggest candy bars,” they say), the share of population under 10 years old and single family home density.
With those factors in mind, San Francisco takes the number one spot, with its expensive real estate and close together houses making it quick to move from one full size Snickers to the next (all those hills and rowhouse steps notwithstanding).
San Francisco snags the top spot for the fourth time in five years, with Bay Area neighbor San Jose coming in second, Philadelphia third, and Long Beach and Los Angeles rounding out the top five.
Searching for neighborhoods with the best candy is a Halloween tradition for many kids and their parents,” said Zillow Chief Economist Dr. Svenja Gudell. “Our annual list is a fun way for families to see how their neighborhood stacks up against others when it comes to trick-or-treating. These are places we think will have plenty of candy and lots of young kids running around from door to door. If you don’t live in one of these cities, look for areas that are getting into the Halloween spirit with decorations and lots of costumed kids.”
And, if you need help deciding how much candy to buy, we did the math for you.
