Kenya’s bedroom was fine, if a little drab. She wanted to add warmth, texture and personality, so she tackled a big upgrade (wood floors) and super personal DIY projects.
From Kenya: The bedroom before redecorating and laminate floor installation could best be described as drab. The walls were gray and the carpet was a darker shade of gray. The room lacked texture and color, but most importantly it lacked character.
It took about a week to have the floors done. The person I hired made several mistakes and had to return to fix flaws in the floor. Prior to the floors being done I made (sewed) my own bedding to add a little pizzazz to the room. With the painting and fabric I wanted the room to reflect places I had traveled. I used fabric I purchased in Nigeria over 13 years ago to make a duvet cover and bed skirt. The pillow cases were made from batik fabric I purchased at a fabric store in Atlanta. The cost of the floors was around $1,700 and the fabric for the back of the duvet, pillow fabric and throw blanket batting and back cover cost me about $100. New nightstand was about $150.
What I love about the space is that it now reflects my style and it’s more cozy. The only thing I’d do differently would be to spend more time looking for a contractor to do the floors. At the end of the day the floors looked great, but getting to that point was a process!
Kenya’s words of wisdom: Words of advice, do your research on the type of flooring you want and shop around for a good price!
