Last weekend, you tackled your bedroom, clearing it of unnecessary clutter and junk. This week, it’s all about building it back up, and getting ready for colder weather.
This Weekend’s Assignment: Get your bedroom clean, ready and warm for this winter.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of slipping between luxurious sheets at a nice hotel at the end of the day — or staying in them just a little bit longer at the beginning of a new one, for that matter. They’re clean, their quality is palpable, and the bed has been meticulously made so that sliding into the bedding is like getting wrapped in a hug. This weekend we’re going to 5-star-hotel (yes, I made it a verb) our beds, just in time for snuggling this winter.
#1: Swap Your Linens
Take stock of your current bedding situation. Have your sheets seen much better days (read: are they ready to be relegated to the drop cloth stash)? Are your pillows at that point in which they’re carrying a frightening percentage of their weight in dust mites and other nasty stuff? (Pro tip: invest in protectant pillow covers.) Is your comforter filling matted or clumped? Decide what part of your bedding could use a refresh and consider treating yourself to something new.
Even if you don’t need anything new, now is the time to swap out your percale for your flannel and put your down comforter into your duvet. Make your bed cold-weather ready.
#2: Wash Your Bedding
Whether you’re all set with your current bedding, you’ve purchased something new, or you’re pulling winter linens from last year out of your linen closet, take this opportunity to wash your bedding.
Wash all your sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers in the hottest water you can. This will get your bedding clean of dirt and also will help kill any dust mites.
For down, synthetic down, or other items with filling (pillows, comforters), be sure to check the tags for instructions. It’s especially important to make sure these items are thoroughly dry so that mold growth doesn’t occur. Tossing a couple tennis balls in with your down items can help fluff them up.
#3: Make Your Bed
A tightly made, but soft, bed is part of what makes a hotel bed so scrumptious. Re-create the feeling in your bedroom by brushing up on your hospital corners technique and making sure the sheets and blankets on both sides are even and smoothed out. To minimize wrinkles, make your bed as soon as your bedding comes out of the dryer. Fling your comforter out several times (easier with a partner) to fluff it up and hug your pillows before putting them on the bed to make them their best plumpy and puffy selves.
