If you weren’t already hip to the Swedish lifestyle trend known as “lagom,” then now’s a great time to smarten up. Defined loosely as “everything in moderation” or “not too much and not too little,” the concept of lagom (pronounced lah-gom) is all about finding a balance — whether at home or in life — that works for you.
So to bring a little more lagom-style mindfulness into your life, we called on Niki Brantmark, creator of My Scandinavian Home and author of Lagom: The Swedish Art of Living a Balance, Happy Life, for help. Read ahead for five ways Brantmark says you can achieve more lagom this holiday season.
Remember that happiness starts at home
“Swedes have an innate ability to create a minimalist, yet calm and beautiful home.” Brantmark says, “Bring some lagom into your life by having a good de-clutter and rid your home of items that you neither love nor need. You’ll feel way more organized and appreciate everything you possess that little bit more.”
Opt for quality over quantity
“For a more lagom-friendly home,” Brantmark says, “any Scandinavian will tell you that if you invest in classic, beautifully crafted pieces made from high quality materials they’ll stand the test of time. They don’t need to be expensive, but they’ll last a lifetime.”
Nature is a great stress-buster
As with all things lagom, less is more, even when decorating with Mother Nature. “Forgo lavish floral bouquets for simple seasonal displays made from items found in your backyard, a nearby park, or out in the countryside.” Brantmark says, “You might even like to start collections: like bottles filled with sand from your favorite beaches or a gallery wall featuring photos of sunsets you’ve enjoyed over the years!”
Give yourself a break (or three)
“It’s easy to assume you’ll get more done if you work solidly throughout the morning and grab a sandwich at your desk instead of heading out to lunch, but the reality is you’ll feel a whole lot better — and maintain efficiency — throughout the day if you take decent breaks.” Brantmark says, “Do as our Nordic friends, and enjoy a fika — coffee and a small treat — every few hours away from your desk and give yourself a proper breather at lunch time.”
Unplug and unwind
“In a world where we find ourselves connected 24/7,” Brantmark says, “give yourself time each day to enjoy some good old fashioned analog activities. Put aside your phone and read, get crafting, bake some cinnamon buns for tomorrow’s ‘fika’ or take a long walk. Not only will you feel happier, you’ll sleep better too.”
