Location: Echo Park — Los Angeles, California
The basics: 4 months, owned — 1,111 square feet
Shawn’s funky cabin is full of warm wood, natural light and a ton of texture. From the wood floors to the planked ceiling the home has tons of laid-back California cool that makes you want to take off your shoes and relax.
Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live in a small cabin tucked away in the Echo Park Hills of Los Angeles with a cat that came with the home, named “OoO-Yah” pronounced “Oh Yeah.” The home was previously owned by a female power couple since the early 1950s, who preserved the rich history of the home while creating many magical additions, including the tiered yard in the back.
What is your favorite room and why? The sunken living room is my special spot. The way the sun glides through the windows during California’s golden hour feels like a giant hug. I hung crystals from the ceiling that speckle mini rainbows across the home creating a cloud of warm light throughout.
If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? The art of bathing is underrated, and I think there is nothing better than an outdoor bathtub or shower. One day I will create the ultimate bath experience nestled beneath the trees by the herb garden for fresh picking.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I found a vintage Ayahuasca blanket from the Peruvian Amazon recently. It’s hand embroidered and is intricately patterned with psychedelic neon colors and shamanic imagery.
Which fictional character would be most at home in your place? One of the characters from a Dali painting. The kind where half their body is sky set on the backdrop of a desert scene.
Shawn’s words of wisdom: Mix it up! A combination of textures creates an interesting dichotomy on the eyes. Buy fuzzy, hard, smooth, rough, opaque, clear, etc. Find things that you really love, go to the swap meets for the best deals, and don’t be afraid of color or things matching or not. Your home’s style will evolve as you grow with it.
Thanks, Shawn !
