The Latest Pick for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club Sounds Like a Perfect Winter Thriller

If you’ve been a fan of recent Reese Witherspoon projects like Big Little Lies and Gone Girl (which she co-produced), you need to know about her book club. The December pick was just announced, and it’s another thriller written by a woman: The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine, which came out in October of this year and is Constantine’s first novel.

Goodreads describes the book as a “mesmerizing debut psychological thriller full of delicious twists about a coolly manipulative woman who worms her way into the lives of a wealthy ‘golden couple’ from Connecticut to achieve the privileged life she wants.” If you liked the twists and turns of Gillian Flynn’s work and the mystery of Liane Moriarty’s books, you’ll probably dig The Last Mrs. Parrish.

Witherspoon has shown a knack for picking women-driven projects for her production company, Pacific Standard, so she’s not a bad tastemaker to follow. She struck a deal to co-produce Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher in 2014, back before the book was even out. She’s also behind a planned film adaptation of 2015’s Luckiest Girl Alive.

It’s pretty rad she’s committed to supporting women writers by not just promoting their books through her book club, but also putting her dollars behind backing film versions of them. The book club seems like a natural extension of Witherspoon’s interests and a great way to find new, great stories to bring to the big screen. Be cool now so you can say you read the book first, before the inevitable film adaptation of The Last Mrs. Parrish comes to fruition.

If you want in on this book club, you can pick up the December selection now at your favorite independent bookseller, Amazon, or at your local library. Use the hashtag #RWBookClub to gab about this thriller along with everyone else tearing through it. There’s even an unofficial Reese Witherspoon Book Club group on Goodreads if you want more recommendations when you’re done.
