Name: Sandy and Mike
Location: Downtown — Los Angeles, California
Size: 970 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years, renting
The Santee Building in downtown Los Angeles was granted historic landmark status in 2001. The former textile factory-turned-modern loft building is now home to Sandy and her fiancé Mike; they’ve lived here for about two years with their friendly labsky (labrador husky mix) Bowie.
The industrial architecture of the loft speaks for itself — Sandy and Mike’s decor simply accents the space. Mike is a dentist and Sandy works at the marketing department at Pandora Radio, but in her free time she also runs a succulent arranging business, Wild Desert Blooms, out of their home.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Industrial, Mid-Century, Eclectic, Modern
Inspiration: We’re inspired by the industrial look of the loft and wanted to incorporate unique features like the metal pin legs on our dining table or the copper iron lantern. We’re also inspired by our travels and different styles from around the world.
Favorite Element: I love our Moroccan corner next to the guitar and ukulele. We got the rugs and the red/orange pouf from Morocco. It’s so vibrant and reminds us of our trip.
Biggest Challenge: The open floor plan loft. It’s a lot of space to fill but also there isn’t a ton of storage space.
What Friends Say: Our friends enjoy our space since it’s nice and open. It’s great for entertaining and it has fantastic views of the city.
Biggest Embarrassment: My dog’s hair. It’s everywhere! We have to sweep all the time.
Proudest DIY: The DIY triangle shelves built by my fiancé and his dad. They’re so unique and really tie the place together. It’s a great statement piece.
Biggest Indulgence: Our dining table was custom built for us by a craftsman from Fresh Dust LA. We loved the unique wood-working and chevron design of the table.
Best Advice: Keep it simple. Sometimes less is more. Not every furniture piece needs to be expensive to look nice. You’d be surprised by what you find when you do a little research online when searching for furniture and decor.
