A Granny Flat That Doubles as an Architect’s Office

In need of an extra space for work and hosting family, architect Ulrika Saar designed this 312 square foot granny flat on her property. Built with Russ Davis of Avalon Constructions, the house is nestled into Saar’s backyard in Sydney, Australia.

The team managed to pack a ton of stuff into a small amount of space. There’s a home office for Saar, bathroom, kitchenette, laundry, living room with a wall bed and some storage space.

The studio puts an emphasis on natural light with a retractable glass wall and clerestory windows. There’s an overhang to keep intense sun out and the ceiling has semi-translucent polycarbonate to keep the space wel lit but kept out of harsh sunlight.

The house has a concrete floor, plywood internally and external hardwood and zincalume. White walls and warm wood accents keep the interior simple and smooth. There’s also a 4,000 liter rainwater tank that collects water for the washer and bathroom, helping to keep the space green and energy efficient.
