Maxing out every inch of living room space isn’t a new idea, but these days that can mean working to turn a rarely used space into a cool new Airbnb to rent out for extra income. Redditor monkeegod recently shared his recent basement conversion, which included turning a small laundry area into a fully functioning kitchen. He turned a space that’s smaller than most sofas into a rental rockstar.
The laundry area was a perfect spot for this transformation. Because water and electrical were already in in place, they didn’t have to run new lines in. The washer and dryer seen here were relocated to another part of the house (hopefully to another area with existing water and electrical).
Monkeegod is understandably proud:
We just finally finished about an hour ago. I just need to show it off to somebody. After about 6 months of starts and stops due to traveling and scheduling conflicts, we finally converted our basement into a finished apartment. We turned a little 78″ wide laundry nook into a fully functional kitchen that includes a refrigerator, convection oven/microwave, gas cooktop, and a dishwasher!
Despite its diminutive size, they managed to cram in all the luxuries of a full-sized kitchen. There is a decent amount of prep space to the right of the stove and sink, and lots of nooks and crannies for storage. It’s a great solution for a short-term rental kitchen.
Monkeegod used IKEA cabinets and DOMJO farmhouse sink, paired with classic white subway tile. The bottom cabinets conceal both a little mini fridge, which is plenty large for guests, and single drawer dishwasher made by Fisher and Paykel— the only one they could find that would work for the space. Lastly, they chose a mounted convection oven/microwave combo to maximize utility and cabinet space — a smart choice.
