A Succulent Seller’s Studio Is 300 Square Feet of Simple, Sweet & Pink — House Call

Name: Lauren Williams and cat Levi
Location: Fort Greene — Brooklyn, NY
Size: 300 square feet
Years lived in: 7 months, renting

My little studio is inhabited by Levi (the cat) and me. I’m a fashion designer with a pottery/cactus side hustle and Levi is a professional cutie pie. Levi’s been with me since college (RISD) and has traveled around with me between Providence, Long Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is key to making every place I move to feel like home.

What is your favorite room and why? If you count my foyer as a room, then that is my favorite room! “Foyer” is probably too fancy of a word and suggests it’s larger than it really is. “Little entry nook”, maybe? Anyway, I think that little nook is key to making my studio not seem like you’re trapped in a single, square room. It was also an opportunity to let me add a little color without it being overwhelming. It’s this teensy pop of pink that brings out the rest of the colors in the remaining space. Also, it’s the perfect landing strip for when bag-lady-me comes home with her hands full.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The perfectly narrow industrial dresser that’s in my fancy foyer is my newest piece. It’s from Urban Outfitters and it stores my small unmentionables and general random paraphernalia—leaving more room in my large dresser for my 327 sweaters.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? Whelp—a bigger kitchen and some sensible rewiring. There is literally 1.5″ of counter space in there (located between the miniature stove and shallow sink) if you don’t count the island I stuck by the window. And the only outlet in the kitchen is conveniently located behind the coils of the refrigerator. I toast bread on my dresser. There is also no electrical outlet in the bathroom AT ALL.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Only purchase things you love (like a cat!) and everything will come together.

Thanks, Lauren!
