Walmart and Target Are Finally Getting Rid of Annoying Receipt Signatures

The next time you shop at Target and Walmart, you won’t have to deal with that pesky receipt signing at the end of checkout. You know how awkward it is to put your money away, sign a receipt, and try to grab your bags while the person behind you makes impatient little sounds? That is the worst!

It is 2018, why are we still signing receipts anywhere? Why are we getting such long printed receipts in stores? Looking at you CVS. We should be saving the paper (since we all throw those receipts away with the bag they came in) and get emailed receipts. I can’t be the only one who finds all of these receipts a little wasteful, right?

It seems that Walmart and Target are getting with the times and killing the receipt signatures. But they’re actually not the first to do this.

Credit card companies Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express have previously said they will no longer require customers to sign their receipts when they check out at stores. Now Walmart and Target have jumped on the bandwagon!

“We believe making the signature requirement optional for EMV chip-enabled merchants is the responsible next step to enhance security and convenience at the point of sale,” Dan Sanford, Visa’s vice president of consumer products, said in company post in January.

While the credit card companies no longer require this, retailers still are able to require a signature if they want. Target plans to eliminate this practice by the end of April, according to The New York Times.

Apparently, one Walmart employee called the receipt signatures “worthless” – so, it makes sense that the retailer plans to chuck the habit out the window. The use of credit cards with EMV chips and the rise in online shopping are the main reasons cited for these switches.

If you’re one of those many online shoppers, you should check out this list of 7 things that you should always pay for with your credit card (instead of your debit card) and several things you never should.

You can make your first purchase at Target sans receipt signature soon and the line that you should be checking out ASAP is the new Hunter x Target launch. Snag some rain boots while you still can!
