A Simple Mid-Century New Jersey Home Makes “Kid-Friendly” Style Look Good — House Call

Name: Carey Hiatt, husband, two kids, two cats
Location: Haddon Township, NJ
Size: 1,700 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned

We moved from a small row home in Philadelphia to this house. After looking for about a year, we fell in love with the neighborhood before the house. It had good bones and a lot of potential but was in need of cosmetic updates.

We spent about a month doing a remodel of the kitchen, upstairs bathroom and converted a bedroom into a den, and an attic into an office.

My favorite room is the living room. Originally, it was designed for a quiet and cozy spot to read. I wanted to create a calming space that wasn’t cluttered with toys and away from the television. I now think of it more as a gathering spot for our family.

It’s still where we go to read and retreat; but also where we have our coffee and plan out our day, hold dance parties, build forts, and entertain. Not to mention, it’s the sunniest and most plant-filled room in the house.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I would add some square footage to the kitchen (I’d love to have an island). I also wouldn’t mind adding an acre of land to the property. We love our neighbors but it’s pretty close quarters.

Thanks, Carey!
