This is What Homes Look Like in the Happiest Country in the World

Life is better in Finland. Proof? A recent report from the United Nations finds that the Nordic nation’s inhabitants are the world’s happiest, as Finland ranks highest in top indicators of well-being, like income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity. (Norway, Denmark and Iceland take the next three spots, so clearly we should be taking these Nordic countries out for coffee and politely asking them to tell us everything).

But after perusing real estate listings, we’re pretty sure that the incredible homes available in Finland have to account for at least some of their residents’ happiness. Here are a few of our favorites.

Sleek, modern and airy, light streams through the floor-to-ceiling windows in this home in Lahti. Built in 2011, the open-concept space features soaring ceilings and light wood finishes. A large enclosed porch and sprawling deck outside enable you to take in the property’s serene woods. See more photos from Re/Max Global.

Between the wall of shelves in the living room and the enclosed glass terrace, this residence in Finland’s capital city offers plenty of space for curling up with a book or kicking back with guests. And the huge window off the sleek white kitchen makes for a cheerful dining space. See more photos from Re/Max Global.

In this one-of-a-kind loft (pictured above and at the beginning of this post), the benefits of top-floor living include curving, vaulted ceilings, plenty of sunlight and a pair of terraces overlooking Helsinki. The renovated residence includes an updated kitchen and a sauna in the bathroom. See more photos from James Edition.

This charming lakeside escape is designed for taking in the incredible views, which you can do while lounging on the wraparound deck or sipping your coffee on the glass-fronted balcony. The property also includes separate guest quarters, so weekends with the family will have just enough (and not too much) togetherness. See more photos from Findia Group.

This log cabin-style home is the quintessential Nordic retreat, with its multiple fireplaces, vaulted wooden ceilings and, of course, a sauna. The two-story home features eight bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, so you’ll have room for all your friends and family who beg to visit. And massive windows provide an incredible view of the dreamy winter wonderland outside. See more photos from James Edition.
