A 165-Square-Foot Tiny Home in Texas is a Rustic Minimal Gem — House Call

Name: Genevieve Tinsley Fox, her husband, and six-month-old daughter
Location: The Heights — Houston, Texas
Size: 165 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned

Gennie works in commercial real estate and her husband Matt is an electrical engineer. The couple started following tiny homes in 2010. After they bought their fixer upper in the charming historic Heights neighborhood in Houston, they decided to jump on board the movement and build their own tiny house to live in while renovating the “big house.”

After a year in the tiny house, they welcomed their daughter Mary Jo. Tiny house living with a newborn has its advantages—everything is within a few steps, and it takes no time to tidy up!

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? Opalhouse acrylic water goblets from Target.

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Ultra-efficient, versatile thoughtful, charm.

What is your favorite room and why? I love all the natural light in the kitchen. It was a challenge to figure out how to balance the need for storage with the need for windows. Open shelving across two windows in the kitchen was the perfect solution.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I would love to put it out in the country somewhere picturesque.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Design your space for how you live. Keep things around that make you smile. Stay on top of clutter.

Sadly, the family’s time in their tiny house has come to an end as they prepare to move into the “big house” fixer upper they’ve finished renovating. But if this home’s rustic modern minimal vibes tickles your fancy, you’re in luck: This tiny house gem is now for sale.

Thanks, Genevieve and family!
