Traveling With Pets? This Airline Has Animal Fares For Just $1

Airlines have gotten a bad rap lately for their treatment not just of people, but their pets—and rightly so, with regular incompetency dramas and tragedies making headlines. But one Florida-based airline wants to welcome all passengers flying with their companion animals—by enticing travelers with ridiculously low pet fees.

For a limited time, and with limited routes, Silver Airways wants you to bring your pet on board with you just $1—and all proceeds will be donated to animal charities.

According to Airfare Watchdog, the airline announced a $1 one-way in-cabin pet fee that applies to domestic cats, dogs, and household birds, available during your flight purchase on silverairways.com for bookings made on or before June 25, 2018. Even better? All of the $1 fees collected will then be donated to an animal shelter.

Regularly priced at $25 for Florida flights and $30 for Bahamian flights, Silver Airways’ Fido Fare is significantly lower than other airline pet fees that average about $100 one-way. (Silver Airways already donates 5% of its regular Fido Fares to an animal shelter.)

And Silver Airways isn’t alone in trying to disrupt the current state of companion animal travel and putting an end to pets in cargo holds forever (RIP, Alejandro)—especially as widespread abuse of service and emotional support animal rules by passengers have led many airlines to crack down on allowing pets in the cabin.

Pet Airways, another Florida-based airline, pioneered pet-only in-cabin flights in 2009 with 13 routes nationally, but ceased operations in 2013. Now, the company is staging a comeback via a crowd-funding campaign on its own website, PetAirways.com.

Not sure I would ever let any of my dogs fly without me, but I think we can all agree that it’s a good thing that there are companies out there trying to come up with safer, more affordable, and more stress-free flight solutions for pets and their owners—and a literal life-saver for animal rescues doing transports, too.
