The rumors have been confirmed: Puget Sound is getting a new celebrity resident. Oprah Winfrey just picked up an $8.275 million estate on Orcas Island in the San Juan archipelago, halfway between Seattle and Vancouver—the first Pacific Northwest property for the billionaire media mogul and her burgeoning real estate empire.
Known as Madroneagle, the 43-acre island estate at 512 Catspaw Lane was purchased in early June by a pair of holding companies belonging to Oprah (and her longtime fitness guru Bob Greene) in two separate transactions.
Designed by RMC Architects and built by Pearson Construction in 2007, the estate features a main house, guest house, and teahouse or “cliffside veranda for open-air yoga”, according to the listing video—perhaps for inviting her new friend Doria Ragland over to ohm again—plus 3,000 feet of unspoiled, west-facing shoreline overlooking the island’s East Sound, “ideal for spectacular sunset views no matter what the weather.” The natural abundance also includes a private pond and a freshwater stream running through the property.
It also includes moorage, should Oprah want to commute by her own boat or seaplane (or the newly minted cruise ship to which she serves as “godmother”), with additional marina services at the nearby Rosario Resort. And there are “opportunities for future stables”, attractive no doubt since Oprah already owns horses and in 2016 purchased an extensive equestrian estate adjacent to her primary home—which the star calls The Promised Land—in Montecito, California. There’s even RV parking, should anyone in Oprah’s entourage want to BYO luxury tiny home or glampervan.
In the main home, there’s a rustic abundance of custom ironwork, rare woods, and reclaimed wooden floorboards taken from the original Sears building in Chicago—something that no doubt attracted Oprah as a buyer. She may have left the Windy City for good, but no doubt will always have a fondness for the place where she built herself into the Queen of All Media.
Luxury amenities include radiant heated floors, a kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven, a huge library with built-in bookshelves (for Oprah’s Book Club and prized first-edition Pulitzer winners), an entertainment room with shuffleboard, a wine cellar, and a huge first-floor office. The bathrooms also feature spa-like amenities, including magnificent and serene soaking tubs and a sauna—perfect for the star’s self-proclaimed penchant for taking baths and elaborate relaxation rituals.
A-list celebs who already own summer homes nearby on Orcas Island include Condeleeza Rice, Robert Gates, Josh Groban and Kat Dennings.
For regular folks who may want to visit the beloved Washington State summer destination by ferry or sea plane, there are loads of much more affordable Orcas Island vacation spots available on Airbnb and HomeAway.
