Could AI Predict Your Kitchen Chores and Do Them For You?

Artificial intelligence might scare some people, but for others, it can make their lives so much easier. AI can even predict our future and anticipate what you need and what might do. But don’t totally freak out, because that can be a very good thing for you!

Who doesn’t hate doing household chores? Even cooking simple meals can get tedious, despite their ease. Wouldn’t it be nice if the house from Smart House actually existed and could do things for you? That movie came out 19 years ago and we still don’t have a house that gives us snacks when we get home!

New research about a machine learning algorithm that predicts kitchen needs will be presented at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition later this month. Computer scientists from the University of Bonn adapted software that can “look five minutes into the future.” Where can we get one?

The machine was shown hours of video of people preparing breakfast and salad in order to teach it to anticipate the next steps needed for various salads or breakfast meals. The idea is to have the machine be able to step in to help with the process. In theory, the AI can remind you if you skipped a step in the recipe.

The AI is currently limited to breakfast and salad (so, don’t expect any hearty meat-filled dishes) but the potential is almost limitless. The hope is for this AI to become “the perfect butler” as the press release states.

The perfect butler, as every fan of British social drama knows, has a special ability: He senses his employer’s wishes before they have even been uttered. The working group of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gall wants to teach computers something similar: “We want to predict the timing and duration of activities—minutes or even hours before they happen,” he explains.

What do you think of this advancement in artificial intelligence?
