IKEA’s New Collection Is for People Who Love Their Stuff

Despite the trends toward minimalism in recent years, some of us aren’t meant to be KonMari devotees with clutter-free spaces. IKEA, despite being a bastion of Scandinavian starkness, has been coming around to a maximalist way of life. Their latest collection is definitely for people who love their stuff, and want to show it off.

SAMMANHANG, which translates to “context” in Swedish, is not about hiding your things away, but showing them off, by putting them into context in your life and in your home.

“We are very good at storage at IKEA – enabling you to pack away your things in a very rational way. With SAMMANHANG we want to explore how to touch the emotional side of storage,” says James Futcher, IKEA Creative Leader.

“We found inspiration for the display box in galleries and museums usually, and how they display collections and valuable objects,” says Lisa Widén and Anna Wallin Irinarchos, two of the collection’s designers. Just as we hope you’ll feel like doing ‒ on a wall or a shelf.”

You’ll definitely find options that elevate your objects and show them off in the best light, from glass boxes to a tiered display stand that’s nicknamed the cake stand. There are even mesh boxes that both show off and obscure items to keep visual clutter to a minimum. There’s closed storage, too, from houndstooth printed matchbox style boxes in various sizes, to paperboard and cork boxes that nest when not in use.

The collection, which will be available at IKEA stores in August, is comprised of 29 pieces ranging in price from $2.99 for a melamine tray to $69.99 for a coffee table.
