This Popular Vacation Destination Is the Safest City to Live In

When looking for a new place to live, some of the most important factors are the cost of living, commute, and safety. Obviously, you want to live in an affordable area that won’t break the bank. It is a hard balance to find a place that you can afford that is close to work. You don’t want to save $500 a month if your commute is an hour longer than usual. But one factor that can get ignored in all of this is how safe an area is.

If you’re moving to a city, a big concern might be which part of the city is actually safe. You might think that cities are more dangerous than suburbs, but according to SafeWise, a website that researches and reports on home safety, 70% of all major cities are actually very safe to live in. Surprisingly, the #1 city is a tourist destination!

In their findings, they found that California had the highest percentage of safe cities (40%) and the highest percentage of dangerous cities (20%).

Out of all the safe cities on SafeWise’s list, the chance of someone falling victim to a crime is 5 in 1,000. Interestingly enough, the top two safest metro areas have a population over 1 million, whereas the more dangerous areas have populations under 1 million.

So, which city is the safest? Virginia Beach, Virginia! In 2017, the city came in at number three on the list and has since managed to move up two spots this year. The average median income is $67,313 and the median home sale price is $257,000.

SafeWise writes:

Whether you prefer the calm of the Chesapeake Bay or the vibrant oceanfront, you can enjoy a rewarding and safe life in Virginia Beach. There’s no question the Virginia Beach police take their jobs seriously (in 2017, there were fewer than two violent crimes per 1,000 residents), but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to have fun. The VBPD is currently brushing up on its dance moves to take on a lip sync challenge thrown by neighboring police departments.

The remaining safe metro areas on the list are (in order):

  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Lexington, Kentucky
  • Anaheim, California
  • San Jose, California
  • San Diego, California
  • El Paso, Texas
  • Austin, Texas
  • Mesa, Arizona
  • Santa Ana, California

Would you ever consider moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia? If not, at least you now know that it is one of the safest places to go on vacation.
