Here’s How to Remove Something from Your Amazon History

Trying to outsmart a nosy partner, or just want to make sure Amazon understands that cat lady tote was a one-time gag gift? Amazon keeps a list of every item you’ve ever viewed on its website, which can be helpful for shopping, but problematic if you’re trying to hide, say, a birthday gift.

But good news: You can curate your Amazon browsing history so it accurately reflects the way you shop—and even turn it off entirely (if you’re not a fan of paper trails). Here’s how…

To completely clear out your recent shopping history:

Luckily, Amazon has made it super easy to clear out your recent search history. In your browser, click on the Browsing History tab at the top of the Amazon homepage and select the “Manage history” option on the upper right hand side. Click “Remove all items” and voila: There’ll be no more previously searched items in sight.

To clear out select items from your shopping history:

To delete specific items from the Recently Viewed section of your Amazon page, start by clicking the Browsing History tab on the homepage. On your browsing history page, find the product you want to ditch and click the “Remove” button below it. Now you can pick and choose which shopping items you’d like to remember.

You can also click the “More like this” button next to any product in your history to help Amazon show you better recommendations across the site.

To turn off your Amazon browsing history altogether:

Prefer to never see any previously searched for items again? No problem. Turn off your the history feature altogether by accessing your Browsing History page (just like before) and selecting “Manage history.” Simply toggle the “Turn Browsing History on/off ” button to “off” and Amazon will keep your browsing history hidden.

Side note: Your browser must be cookie-enabled for this to work properly. Clearing your browser cookies will re-enable your browsing history once you’ve turned it off.

How to Manage Your Browsing History from the Amazon App

If you’re a hardcore shopper using the dedicated Amazon app, you can access your Browsing History page by opening the menu from the upper left hand corner and selecting “Your Account.” Scroll down until you see a section for “Personalized content,” then click on “Browsing history.”

From this page, you can hit “Delete” to remove certain items, or select “Manage” to delete your recent history or turn the browsing history feature off completely.
