How do you know what the next big thing is going to be? Well, if you’re Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson, you have the entire marketplace to see what new styles are coming–and what new styles shoppers are looking for. The changing of the seasons is a perfect time to refresh your space, and she’s identified six trends that are a great way to do it. Even better: Isom Johnson has also picked three buys that she’s currently loving, taking some of the guesswork out for shoppers.
“A riff on the growing ’90s trend that combines the ever-popular rainbow theme with pastel hues. This trend adds a subtle shine to everything from lighting to home decor. Searches for ‘iridescent decor’ are up more than 400 percent so far this year on Etsy.”

A Rental-Friendly Personal Welcome
“We spend so much effort into making our homes cozy and reflective of our style but this season I’m encouraging people to have their entrance make a statement. It’s worth investing a little effort in the curb-appeal of your home whether its welcomes or custom door decals or house numbers. I love this planter house number and in fact searches related to these items are up 130 percent this year on Etsy.”

“The ’70s were a time of comfort and bohemian flair which is making a comeback in home decor. Today’s ’70s inspired homes feature macrame, wicker furniture (e.g. the rattan trend we spotted in Germany earlier this year), and vibrant colors. On Etsy, we’ve seen a 57 percent increase in searches for ’70s home decor.'”
“Brushstrokes are the newest iteration in watercolors. Its handcrafted touch celebrates the popularity of the wabi sabi philosophy of embracing imperfections. We’re seeing this trend emerging in ceramics and I predict it will move into textiles this season.”
“This new take on mirrors marries high design and function. For example, we’re seeing mirrors that double as pieces of art or storage while still being a traditional mirror. Searches related to modern wall mirror’s on Etsy have increased 44 percent in the last year.”
“There is a global increase in interest in sustainability and eco-consciousness which has sparked excitement around upcycled decor. We’ve seen a spike in search on Etsy of 120 percent for ‘upcycle home decor’ in this year and there are more than 75,000 items listed as upcycled in the home and living category. I love this season for the way it brings new life to something you wouldn’t expect in someone’s home, for example this ring log lamp.”
