Another Cute A-Frame That’ll Make You Wish You Had a Cabin — House Call

Name: Flora Moreno de Thompson
Location: Twain Harte, California
Size: 1,300 square feet
Years lived in: 8 years, owned

The Thompson Lodge is a modified a frame cabin in Twain Harte, California. It was built in 1972 by my husband’s grandparents as a weekend getaway home. It has been in the family for three generations. We have spent a lot of time fixing it up; mostly painting and decluttering the place. We love bringing our two kids (Zelda, 2, Bruno, 3) here and wanted to make sure everything is pretty childproof and rugged, without making it look that way. Our goal is to make it comfortable and beautiful for visitors and family.

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Simple, practical, uncluttered, quiet.

What is your favorite room and why? The living area, with its views of the deck and the forest, is my absolute favorite spot in the house. I can stare outside for hours. When it’s warm out, the deck becomes an extension of the living room. In colder months, it’s nice to stay cozy by the fire. It’s also nice to be close enough to chat to someone in the kitchen without having to get up from the couch!

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I’d definitely give the kitchen a makeover. I’d like to remove the cabinets over the peninsula to open the space up, and maybe rearrange the placement of the fridge and stove. But for now, it works well for us. It’s all original (except for the fridge) from 1972!

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? Kansas City dining chairs from Wayfair; framed original blueprints (found in a stack of papers!); and the Paradiso navy area rug, also from Wayfair.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Stick to stuff you like and will actually use. For me, I also feel that clutter distracts me from really enjoying my space and the people in it so I try to keep the visual noise to a minimum.

Thanks, Flora!
