An Artist’s 400-Square-Foot Studio Makes Room for Color — House Call

Name: Briana McNamara
Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Size: 400 square feet
Years lived in: 6 months, renting

My little home is a studio apartment located in a historic home just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. I live in the quaint space with my plant babes, all 10+ of them. I’m a single, city-living gal, graphic designer by day (and sometimes night) and artist from the mitten state. My decor changes frequently, but never strays from the general funky-yet-poised style.

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room—*ahem*, corner of my apartment—is my lounge space. I managed to snag the perfect size love seat to nestle against my focal wall and painted a canvas customized for the space. In my lounge space is also my mini indoor garden. Having greenery makes my home feel fresh, welcoming, and cozy.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing I purchased for my home was a plant wall hanging from a local shop called Rebel Reclaimed. This store is a top five fave for me; it has the cutest home accessories, paper goods, plant babies, and more.

I love accessorizing with my own paintings and designs, and findings from local shops. Pops of color, unique textures, and playful throw pillows are my weakness.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Don’t be afraid to get crafty! I was nervous about moving into a studio layout after having lived in a larger apartment with plenty of space, but I stalked Pinterest and Instagram accounts and collected countless magazines for inspiration. One of my favorite things in my apartment was a result of getting crafty to accommodate the space; I designed and built a custom butcher block (with some help along the way). This piece aligns perfectly with my counter top, creating more counter space and can even be wheeled out to act as an island when guests come over.

Thanks, Briana!
