A Couple Live Aboard a Tiny Bohemian House Boat — House Tour

Name: Kajon Cermac and Bob Muellner
Location: Marina Del Rey, California
Size: 40′ LOA, 13.5′ Beam
Years lived in: 3 years, owned

Kajon and Bob raised their family in Thousand Oaks, but as their kids got older and their schedules got busier, having to commute to west L.A. for work felt like more and more of a hassle. The couple’s creative solution was a fun one: They decided to simply go all in and live on a 40-foot house boat during the week!

If you live in L.A. and you listen to KCRW, you no doubt will recognize Kajon’s name as the one that gives you the traffic report! Coming from a theatrical background—and admitting that she has zero sense of direction—she is the perfect traffic host as she explains the situations in ways that people actually understand (and with simply the best voice possible)!

Though there can be a lot of unexpected expenses to living on a boat, as a described by Kajon in this news piece, it’s also a way to skip sky-high rents if you want to be close to the water.

Kajon and Bob met 40 years ago when they were both working at the Ambassador East Hotel at the Pump Room. Bob was bartending and Kajon was a cocktail waitress. Many years and kids later, they now both work in Santa Monica and love living the small, nautical lifestyle. Boat living during the week means better commutes, but it also affords them more time to relax after work: Most evenings you’ll likely find Kajon, Bob, and their pup, Zuzu, sitting outside on their deck and enjoying the sunset and the view.
