Name: Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan
Location: Park Slope — Brooklyn, New York
Size: 3,240 square feet
Years lived in: 8 years, owned
Sophie lives in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn with her husband Michael, two kids Mae and Marius, and three cats. The neighborhood is best known for rows of brownstone homes, one of the nation’s first food co-ops, and access to Prospect Park (what I like to call the Central Park of Brooklyn).
Sophie and Michael are founders of Oeuf, an eco-friendly children’s furniture and clothing brand. Sophie cites her children as her greatest inspiration, which translates into their home’s design, too. Neutral tones and natural materials dominate a space sprinkled with special items from the couple’s past, as well as elements that infuse the space with whimsy and humor (shoutout to the trapeze hanging in the living room). It’s a casual and comfy home—perfectly imperfect— and a place that nurtures creativity and exploration.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Eclectic.
Inspiration: Folk art, travel, country auctions, flea markets.
Favorite Element: Corner house provides lots of light.
Biggest Challenge: Keeping all those windows clean.
What Friends Say: Does the toilet turn off by itself? (On the parlor floor the half-bathroom has a toilet whose tank has a wash basin on top. Before the water goes into the tank, it comes out of a faucet for hand-washing.) The answer to the question is… (like any toilet)… yes, the refill water turns off by itself.
Biggest Embarrassment: Parlor wood floor; it looked good in the store but at home looks like plastic.
Proudest DIY: My walnut desk made while studying at Pratt as my furniture design class final project.
Best Advice: Buy what you love. (Regret only comes from the things you loved but didn’t get, not from what you did.) Be patient, your home will reflect your true taste when the objects you display are acquired over time.
Dream Sources: American Museum of Natural History’s collection of Northwest Coast Indigenous art.
