New Parents Squeeze a Nursery into a One-Bedroom With a Living Room Redesign — House Call

Name: Neda Bajwa, my husband, Amir, our dog, Kiko, and our baby girl, Alaia
Location: San Francisco, California
Size: 750 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, renting

Our home design combines mid-century mod, Moroccan, tropical, and glam all in one. It is a combination of black, white, marble, and brass touches throughout. You’ll notice pops of color such as emerald that tie into our tropical living plants brought all the way from our last L.A. home. Each piece is budget-friendly but tasteful, combining global touches from our travels around the world. Our small space is proof that design and creativity can make even a one-bedroom apartment feel like a photo-worthy dream home.

I live with my husband, Amir, our dog, Kiko, and our baby girl, Alaia. With our daughter being born this year, we have created a multi-functional, bright, and fun nursery space by re-designing our living room.

Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Mid-century modern, innovative, fresh, geometric, bold.

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is our living room because you can find memorable pieces that we have collected from our travels abroad such as our Moroccan leather poof, our pom-pom throw, brass lantern, and more. I love that we were able to create a baby nursery in this space as well, incorporating a brighter version of the Moroccan, mid-century modern theme. You’ll even find a fun piece of art on our gallery wall: the original Beverly Hills Hotel wallpaper design as our main frame. Some of my favorite pieces in our living room are all of our gold mirrors, ranging from vintage finds to retro modern shapes.

If you could magically change something about your home, what would it be? I would love my next home to have more space to showcase more of our favorite items. There are a lot of treasures you can find in our space but have to look a little deeper. Another thing I miss most is outdoor space. There is so much I would love to do with a balcony or even small yard space. We love to entertain and designing a magical little outdoor nook would complete our home.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? One of the last pieces we bought for our home:

Gold stem floor lamp; dining table; gold oval mirror with shelf; Magis dining chairs; and capiz hot air balloon mobile.

Any advice for creating a home you love? You can definitely make your home #designgoals within budget. We added brass knobs from CB2 to some of our budget-friendly pieces (IKEA console, entry cabinet, Living Spaces dresser, etc), to give them an upgraded designer, quality look.

You can repurpose frames and mirrors from vintage fairs and flea markets by framing fabric or prints you love.

Plants, plants, plants! They add color, life, and instant decor to any home.

Thanks, Neda Bajwa!
