Perfect Night In is a series where we ask actors, artists, entrepreneurs, and beyond how they’d spend the ultimate luxury—a blissful evening at home.
In 1993, Jonathan Adler jumpstarted his career by launching his first ceramic collection at Barney’s New York. 25 years later, Adler’s name and brand have transformed into the design icon we all know and love today.
This October, Now House by Jonathan Adler—the first designer collection sold exclusively on Amazon—released glamorous home statements for the world to see. Not only is the new line filled with colorful, patterned furnishings that the designer is known for, but the items are surprisingly affordable!
However, let’s be real, everyone needs to take a chill pill every once in a blue, vibrant moon. We got to sit down with the designer and find out how he does just that in the comfort of his own home. Pull up a chair (perhaps one of Adler’s) and stay a while.
Set The Scene
Your perfect homebody scene in 5 words: Husband, dog, remote control, roast chicken, apple pie.
Are you alone or with someone else? Husband and dog.
Night-in uniform: Stan Smiths, white UNIQLO jeans, navy UNIQLO t-shirt, Tom Brown sweatshirt.
What two people, dead or alive, would you let crash your night? I would want my dad, who unfortunately died 20 years ago. And I wouldn’t mind throwing Camille Paglia in.
Favorite cozy product: I need my husband to make me at least four cups of mint tea and I need to never make his tea for him. Never happens, but it’s a dream.
TV or a movie? TV.
What are you watching? The truth of me is I’m a cultural omnivore. I read five books a week, I read 17,000 newspapers, I read, read, read. And yet, I somehow find the time to watch an extraordinary amount of television. My television taste runs from the gruesome, like The First 48, I’m addicted, to the gruesomer, like Intervention, to the frivolous, like Love Island on Hulu, to the prestige, like Succession on HBO, and I just polished off season one of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on Amazon, loved it.
eBooks or the real deal? E-book, I read on my iPad.
Currently reading? Right now, I’m reading a book called Transcription by Kate Atkinson, and I just finished Goodbye Columbus by Philip Roth. I’m in a great age where I can’t remember anything, so I can re-read all my favorite books of the past as if reading them anew.
Silence or music? Never music. There is too much banter, even though Simon and I have been together for 24 years. We’re still just constantly yammering at each other.
Board games, yay or nay? The only board game we have is Scrabble, which we bought at a yard sale and it’s only in French with 17 letters. So nay.
Order in or cook for yourself? Cook.
What are you eating? I eat very clean, it’s usually like a meat and a veg. It’s roast chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, apple pie.
What drink are you pouring? Simon and I are boring old tee-totals, so I’m drinking water.
What’s for dessert? Apple pie.
Late night snack? Here’s my truth. I work out HAM on the daily at the gym, and then I eat an astounding amount of food and desserts. So my late night snack is that apple pie.
Do you have a self-care ritual? No, Simon and I are both dudes. We’re both ready in two minutes. Minimalist is better than feral, but feral is more accurate.
What do you try to avoid at all costs? The telephone.
Candles, yay or nay? Yay! I burn my scented tomato candle, it’s my favorite. It smells like a tomato pie.
Face masks, yay or nay? Nay.
Bubble bath, yay or nay? Nay, feral.
Chores, yay or nay? Nay, feral.
Ideal bedtime? 11:30 p.m.
