When I moved to New York City last year I approached the prospect of furnishing and decorating my first “real” apartment with excitement and, in typical Virgo fashion, a vision. My main goal was to create a cozy abode that would be my refuge from the insomnia and nonstop hustle happening outside. Of course, the most important area in which to achieve this goal was my bedroom, a dark space that got zero natural light but that I was determined to transform into my own personal hibernation den.
Thanks to an Amazon gift card, I focused my searching there, researching rugs, beds, bedding, pillows — pretty much all the essentials. Out of all the items I eventually bought for my new home, my proudest purchase is this unassuming white comforter that has brought me more joy and peace than basically anything else–for $35.
Why do I love it so? Let me count the ways.
It’s highly soft and fluffy. I wouldn’t say that the comforters I grew up with were uncomfy exactly, but I can say that once I got this one I realized what I had been missing out on all these years. The comforters of my adolescence were a bit flatter and scratchier, and I would never have used them without a top sheet. Not so with the Hanna Kay one—super soft and fluffy (especially after washing), I didn’t even bother with a duvet cover for the first few months because it was unnecessary.
It keeps me at a good temperature all night. I sleep hot—as in, open windows in the middle of January hot. Finding a comforter that was fluffy but not suffocating was a major point of worry for me while I was scoping out options. Happily, this one fit the bill: after using it for well over a year I can confirm that it keeps me comfortable in both the winter and summer.
It’s a down alternative comforter. Knowing that down isn’t the most ethical choice for bedding, I made it a priority to find a comforter that was down alternative. Aside from being friendlier to animals, down alternative is hypoallergenic and easier to wash and maintain compared to traditional down.
